Media On Demand Kiosk

Client: Emily Carr University

Roles: Frontend Development

Problem

Each year there is a need for a Media on Demand Kiosk to show student work. Is there a way to use the Kaltura media streaming platform within the context to make this process simpler and more sustainable?

Solution

Adapt the Kaltura platform and create custom styled galleries to fit the client's visual styling needs. Use the bulk ingestion tools provided within the platform to reduce the human work needed to set up the kiosk.

The Galleries

All of the Kaltura Media Space interface had to be hidden and made inaccessible. The images in the galleries were changed to the posters for the films and animations. A menu was added to navigate between the galleries and some branding was added to reflect the Emily Carr Grad Show.

Kaltura itself hosts media including images, so any images used in the interface were actually hosted within Kaltura itself. Mouse over or Tap the image to see the gallery before restyling.

The Entries

Each of the film / animation pages had to also be restyled to reflect the aesthetics of the gallery. This was tedious given the tools Kaltura provided having to be done one by one. This was overcome by attaching a javascript plugin to the video player that would attach the style sheet to the page.

In addition some javascript was needed to return to the galleries once the video ended. This encouraged viewers to watch more videos as well as showcase all of the work if someone new were to enter the theatre. Mouse over or Tap the image to see the entry before restyling.
